Adopting a New Mindset
Living in a warm Mediterranean climate is the dream of many, and the Costa del Sol's weather will more than meet your expectations. The climate encourages a more active lifestyle and a better diet, which leads to improved life expectancy (among the highest in the world).
It is extremely easy to eat well cheaply in Spain, with many healthy foods (tomatoes, fresh fish, avocados, citrus fruits, etc.) are farmed locally.
In terms of exercise, it is tempting to suspect that the hot weather stifles many people’s desire to be active when the option of lying by the pool with a chilled beer in hand beckons. However, the fact that you are drawn outside by the weather engenders a different mindset: even if you are not necessarily an avid jogger, tennis enthusiast or intrepid cyclist, at least you are moving around more and not cooped up in the warm folds of a sofa for much of the year.
It is also a vanity thing. On the Costa del Sol, you spend a far greater percentage of your time wearing relatively little, so it is only natural to want to look as good as possible. Instead of forking out hundreds of pounds on a stylish winter coat in northern Europe, on the Costa del Sol your time, effort and money is far better put to use in gyms, or at tennis clubs, or investing in good-quality running shoes. The objective and end result is the same – to look good. It's just that, on the Costa del Sol, you will feel good as well.

The heat and sunshine also help: your skin will soon look better (provided, of course, you take adequate precautions against the sun's dangerous rays), thanks to increased exposure to the sun and higher water intake. A typical, almost subconscious response to the extra heat is to drink more fluids than you did before, although the temptation is for this to include an over-indulgence in alcohol – continuing to live like a holidaymaker!
Clearly, then, one of the first things you need to do is get a handle on your mindset. There is so much to do on the Costa del Sol but, whether you are buying a property as a holiday apartment or as a permanent home, you don’t have to cram it all in at once. The sun will be shining another day, and another. Welcome to Spain’s outdoor world...
